Carothers kitchen sadness
I got all the stuff for the infamous buttermilk pie from H-E-B tonight, but when I asked for the key to the kitchen, Kendra informed me that the RA’s had ‘lost’ it – or someone has stolen it. If it weren’t so agonizingly hard to get into the kitchen this might be amusing to me. I mean, someone is going to great lengths to protect the contents of that kitchen, but it’s time to tell them that everything thats not nailed down is already gone. Give it up already!
Well the HEB trip wasn’t completly in vain. I now am the proud owner of the cheapest 12-cup coffee pot ever. cheaper even than the cheapest 4-cup pot. And just in time too. I’m supposed to be doing a loooooot of EE316 work this weekend (and i mean a LOT… craig!) . Even now I’m sipping coffee and waiting for its magic powers to enable me to work well into this friday night.
Ah yes friday night. The one night we all get to forget about school, and just party hard. Except for me, as I’m doing EE work. Oh, and Mike too. And Jeremy was already in bed at midnight. Oh, and Elissa went to sleep a half hour ago. Alex is planning on getting up at 7am, so hes in bed too. Looks like bryan has either been asleep for 4 hours or working on some OS project. Oh ya – we really live it up here at UT. Well, time to get crackin on that EE work…
Long Time
Its been a while since any personal posts. I don’t think i want to turn this into a tech blog, so i’ll probably keep it to personal things from now on, except for the possibility of interesting projects. Or maybe i should start a second blog for that….
Well, I can’t find my own camera, so after giving back my parents i have nothing to take pictures with. So sad. I’ll have to steal Elissa’s camera to take a picture of the sweet necklace she gave me. My old one broke when I was playing with it (made of fishing line). This one on the other hand is made by ingenious hippies, who decided the core of the necklace should be made out of the same stuff they use to support bidges: steel twine. I think I’m more likely to hang myself on this rather than break it.
You know what sucks? My girlfriend getting mono. I really feel bad for her, with all her normandy work, being perpetually tired is not what she needs right now. If it weren’t for studying in the same room and eating together I don’t think I would ever get to talk to her. We are both swamped with work. I’m taking 18 hours and she has the Normandy Scholars program. And on top of that, I wish Rex (the ex bf) wouldn’t complicate her life by giving her a guilt trip over his own mistakes.
Elissa and I decided to go to San Antonio to visit my parents last week. I think everyone got along. Looks like my parents like her and she likes my parents. I told them both they would. It made me happy that she wanted to get to know them.
Mom made Grandma Robison’s famous buttermilke pie, and we all just about died of pleasure. I now have the recipie, so this weekend I plan on trying my hand.
And then comes Ubuntu
Disclaimer: this post is not really about me at all, but about my break-up with gentoo. If you don’t care about linux, don’t bother reading it. If you are scared of linux, install ubuntu.
I ran gentoo linux on my laptop (Dell 600m) for the last year or so, and while it was fun, and moderatly easy, there were several hardware things that just didn’t work. Recently I updated my gentoo kernel, and broke all wireless drivers. The whole point of the kernel upgrade was to improve my chances of getting direct rendering working, but that didn’t work either. Just because I could, I tried downloading gentoo’s suspend2 sources, a kernel with the primary objective to get suspend working in linux. Well, guess what, that didn’t work either. Last night I finally got fed up with gentoo not working, and decided to download the new debian-based Ubuntu. (Just a side note, ubuntu might have been the fastest off-campus thing i’ve ever downloaded, as I hit a full 1000Kps using the torrent).
The next morning I didn’t want to do my homework due later that day, so I decided to burn the CD and install. The whole process of backing up, installing, and restoring took a little over an hour. On the first boot I had sound, direct rendering, wireless drivers (including a wireless manager), acpi events (lid close turns off screen), and even 2 levels of suspend!!! I had spent a total of over 40 hours trying to get those things all working at the same time on gentoo, and had failed. Ubuntu came up with them all fresh out of the box. Way to go ubuntu. It was nice gentoo, but its time for me to move on.
San Antonio for a night
I’m in San Antonio tonight, returning camping gear and wishing travis a happy birthday (18). Mom made some delicious cake, and benigins bar and grill gave travis some brownie cake. So so far I’ve had two birthday cakes for travis. :-)
Last night Bryan and Jeremy and I saw the Texas Renegade band (the one casey is in) at Waterloo Icehouse. They played like half new songs, and they were all really good, so i can’t wait for them to release their next CD. So you owe it to yourself to checkout http://www.txrenegade.com and see if they are playing near you any time soon.
And on a nerdier subject, I discovered http://heavens-above.com/, a place where you can check to see if there are any visible satalites passing overhead and other celestial things of interest.
I am way too sleepy, and get to take dad to the airport tomorrow morning (in 3 hours… ) so i better get some sleep.
Moving to WordPress
Wow, wordpress is much better than blogger. As soon as i figure out how to import my blogger posts (there is a way) everything will be copestetic.
UPDATE: Got most everything moved over… by hand. I blame blogger, not wordpress, since blogger has also since eaten a post a wrote.
I try my hand at peachy cobbler
I decided in response to all of carolines apple pies that i had to make some of my mom’s peach cobbler. After she emailed me the recipe I got to work. It was delicious and everyone kept making sexual moaning noises as they ate it. Except for that mutant elissa. she still can’t stand the warm peaches thing… maybe next time we can refrigerate some of it. mmmmmmm yummy
